The advanced air mobility infrastructure company UrbanV and the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC) announced a significant milestone for the integration of drones in cities, having achieved the first SAIL III operational authorization in Italy.

This advancement was demonstrated through a series of flights conducted from the Pianabella Vertiport at Rome Fiumicino Airport. The tests validated operational procedures and technological platforms for drone operations in complex urban environments.

The mission utilized the DLV-2 logistics drone, developed by Speedbird Aero, which meets the stringent safety requirements necessary for operations under the SAIL III (Specific Assurance and Integrity Level) standard. During the flight, the drone transported a package along a route of approximately 6 km, landing at Cineland Ostia after crossing key infrastructure such as the A91 Rome–Fiumicino motorway and the airport’s railway line.

The operations were carried out in coordination with entities such as ENAV, Aeroporti di Roma, and local authorities, without affecting airport operations, demonstrating the feasibility of integrating drones with conventional airspace.

This type of mission paves the way for real-world air logistics applications, such as connections between hospitals, transport of critical supplies, and industrial operations, and is part of the implementation of Italy’s National Advanced Air Mobility Plan.

The project also demonstrates how drones can evolve from experimental testing to scalable urban operations, creating air corridors that could be integrated in the future with advanced air mobility (AAM) networks, vertiports, and eVTOL aircraft.
