Vertical Aerospace Achieves Historic Milestone with Piloted Thrustborne Transition in its eVTOL

6 April 2026

Vertical Aerospace announced a key advancement in electric aviation by successfully completing a piloted thrustborne transition in a full-scale eVTOL aircraft. This achievement marks the first time an aircraft of this type has performed this maneuver under the strict supervision of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in collaboration with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

The thrustborne transition allows the aircraft to take off vertically like a helicopter and then smoothly accelerate into wing-supported flight, similar to that of a conventional airplane. This process represents a critical step towards full bidirectional transition capability, essential for commercial operations without the need for traditional runways.

The flight was conducted on April 2, 2026, at the company’s flight test center at Cotswold Airport, by test pilot Paul Stone. During the maneuver, the aircraft took off vertically, tilted its front propellers to transition to horizontal flight, and completed a successful landing, demonstrating control and stability under real-world conditions.

This technical milestone, considered one of the most important in the company’s history, was achieved in conjunction with a preliminary financing agreement of up to $850 million, strengthening Vertical Aerospace’s position on its path to certification and future commercial operation.

This advancement validates the aircraft’s ability to perform one of the most complex transitions in aviation: transferring lift from rotors to wings in actual flight, positioning the company as a key player in the global development of advanced air mobility.
