Electra announced the successful completion of the first urban demonstration flight of its Ultra Short hybrid-electric aircraft in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, marking a new milestone in the development of regional air mobility solutions.
The demonstration took place at the Columbus Street Terminal during the CAPA Airline Leader Summit Americas and showcased the capabilities of the company’s hybrid-electric propulsion and blown-lift technology. According to Electra, this technology allows for takeoff and landing in distances of approximately 150 feet (46 meters), potentially enabling operations from non-traditional locations such as parking lots, rooftops, open areas, and floating platforms.
The flight was conducted using the EL2 technology demonstrator, while the company continues to develop its future commercial aircraft, the EL9, designed to carry nine passengers on regional routes.
Electra noted that this concept is part of its “Direct Aviation” vision, a model that aims to provide more direct and accessible regional air connections, reducing travel times on routes that currently rely primarily on ground transportation.
The company also highlighted that a recent market analysis identified thousands of routes in the United States where this type of aircraft could significantly reduce door-to-door travel times, especially for regional flights that currently lack efficient air options.
The announcement comes as Electra continues to participate in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) initiatives driven by the U.S. Department of Transportation, aimed at accelerating the safe integration of new regional aviation technologies.
