FAA Moves Toward a New Unified Air Traffic Control Automation System

Washington, D.C. – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a new strategic step toward the complete modernization of the air traffic control system in the United States by launching a call for proposals for the Common Automation Platform (CAP), an infrastructure designed to replace the current en-route and terminal systems. This initiative is part of the national plan spearheaded by Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy to build a more robust, safer, and future-proof air traffic control architecture.
FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized that CAP will provide controllers with updated technological tools, optimizing safety and reducing operational delays. Currently, the ERAM and STARS systems manage en-route flight control and approach operations, respectively. The new platform will unify both capabilities into a single, modern, and adaptable system that aims to increase the resilience of the National Airspace System (NAS).
The FAA stated that interested vendors should review the requirements posted on SAM.gov. The agency also noted that it recently issued requests for information related to runway lighting systems and air traffic flows, and that it will soon announce the selection of a Principal Integrator to lead the construction of the new air traffic control system.
